CONCORD- Carolina International School students learned about friction and motion while building their own hovercrafts.

The school teamed up with Chase Educational Consulting (CEC) to bring its Hovercraft Project to its students. The Hovercraft Project travels from city to city to work with schools, education organizations, after-school programs, religious institutions and community centers.

Students are broken into teams and compete to build rideable hovercrafts in a few hours.
According to its website, The Hovercraft Projects meets curriculum requirements and promotes interest in science, technology, engineering, art and math.

Sue Lee, seventh-grade science teacher, said this activity was a memorable learning event for her students. They were assigned various roles and had to work together to apply academic concepts and math computations to a real-world situation.

“It was so powerful to see the students go beyond their comfort zones and push past their frustrations to problem solve and build their hovercraft,” Lee said. “This program helped to equip students with applied skills they need to succeed in all areas of their lives like problem-solving, effective communication, team work, perseverance and cooperation.”
